Jim was a year and a half older than me, and a good older brother. I think of the fun we had on the farm just outside Naperville IL What a great way to grow up. Barns and silos and sheds to explore. A couple small gravel pit ponds where we went swimming. During those times Jim - a good swimmer - kept an eye on me. I actually took swimming lessons ... they didn't take.
We used to build forts next to the line fence. There was a small shed along another part of that fence. It belonged to my Uncle who owned a construction company. He kept his blasting equipment locked up in the shed, and that knowledge alone was pretty exciting to a couple small boys. Wow! Dynamite! Our imaginations ran wild with the endless possibilities. Never did see inside that shed though.
We got in our share of trouble too. Once, when our parents were gone for the day, Jim and I foolishly decided to make a small camp fire in a rotted out base of a hollow tree. The tree stood alone in a pasture and being hollow really started drafting well. Hmmm, should have thought of that. Soon the whole tree was engulfed and my Uncle, the construction mogul, came bouncing up in his pickup with an irrigation pump in tow. He was madder than a hornet and doing some considerable yelling. I know he got the fire out and I seem to recall Jim taking most of the responsibility. Not at all sure my Uncle believed him, but that's a story for another time.
One of my fondest memories of Jim and me was the first time we got to ride our bicycles to school in downtown Naperville. Beautiful day, maybe late in May. The sun was warm but still low enough in the morning sky to make everything golden. It was about a 4 mile ride. Jim, being oldest took the lead and made the decisions, once again taking care of me. It was so perfect, and possibly the first time the word freedom actually held some meaning - for both of us. The essence of that day, that experience, stays with me. I can almost see it, smell it, live it again. Almost. Goodbye Jim, and thanks.
